How healthy living nearly killed me | AJ Jacobs Published on http://www.ted.com For a full year, AJ Jacobs followed every piece of health advice he could — from applying sunscreen by the shotglass to wearing a bicycle … Share Category: Videos Submitted by: healthylivingsolution 44 Comments Facebook Comments Seeye Tesfa I bet his wife has yet to give him a dollar. Reply god yes, religion no the most useless TED ever Reply Ethan Elliott Dude, you tried to get smarter by creating mental borders, You tried to become spiritual by reading the bible, and you tried to gain strength by hiding. Sounds like you spent your time killing yourself thoroughly. Reply Joanna Southcott every one is commenting about how dumb this person is, he doesn't know what a healthy lifestyle is. but he was trying to be extreme, writing a book about being "The Healthiest Person Alive" His goal was to be overwhelmingly healthy. You guys should have payed attention to his goal. Reply Andrew BMc. Did he just manage to do a whole TED talk just to sell his book? Reply akronymus rubbish Reply Sarah Saurus My god this is insufferable.. xD Healthy lifestyle: don't eat too much garbage food, go outside every once in a while, apply some sunscreen in direct sun, wash yourself. There. AJ Dumbface. Reply The Major Only an idiot takes every fucking advice another idiot tells him. He isn't that smart, he reminds me of the following youtube Channels: every PBS channel, Vlogbrothers and their channels, Buzzfeed and the worst perpetrator of them all, WatchMojo. Now if people could stop producing clickbait and actually made real content for once, I'd very much appreciate it. Reply Reid Hammond I feel like so many of the views in the comments don't understand why Jacobs is doing these things.. Reply mavishill I think we all know that this was going downhill the moment he said he started reading the Bible. This is the worst TedTalk ever. This guy is complete idiot or he thinks he's marketing his book to idiots believing this guy. He has no idea of 'Healthy living' and clearly he's so dumb he might as well light the whole encyclopedia on fire. Reply Psi Clops TED used to have amazing people on. I watched videos with doctors and material science engineers and physicists. Now it's worthless. Time to ignore TED talks. Reply Riza hariati Ohh.. I understand now why I got so angry when my neighbors turn on that loud music or that rooster alarm. It was my fight or flight response that turned on!! (and turned into rage). Now that I know, I can ignore them ^_^ Reply Derek Prichard I like that this video, while yes it definitely goes to the extreme of healthy living and kind of reaches a point of obsession with doing every little task or chore that is told to us will make us happy, shows that healthy living is not about an ultimatum of choosing one way or the other. It is about learning what is best for you and what medium can be found between the three aspects he spoke of; Spirit, body, and mind. To be healthy we need to make conscious decisions that bring us joy, but we can't let those decisions dictate our lives. If you want to go out one night and drink as well as scarf down two cheeseburgers does not make you unhealthy. Letting that behavior become a habit is what makes it unhealthy. If you go out every night a week and drink a large amount of alcohol and eat only junk food, than I would say you are being pretty unhealthy. The same goes for being healthy. If you spent all day, every day at the gym but neglect to eat enough because you are worried that it'll make you fat or you have begun to neglect your family and friends to go work out, then you are missing out on a huge junk of health. All in all, there needs to be a midground and while the recommendations made by doctors and organizations are great and useful, following all of them is going to be very rough on you. One thing that AJ Jacobs spoke about that quite interested me was the idea of noise pollution. WIth it being the year 2015 now, everything is noisy. From the music to the people, everything has gotten louder and louder trying to be heard and be noticed. So my question is, could we possible be adapting to the noise levels? Could the threshold for when our fight-or-flight response is set off be increasing? And if that threshold is increasing I think we are in for trouble once the noise levels go back down because it will take so much more to increase that response we relied on to survive for so many years. Reply Armani garrison what would be going too far when it comes to taking better care of yourself? and who comes up with this stuff? is taking healthcare to the extreme going to raise life expectancy or are we just being overprotective of ourselves? there are kids who eat dirt and are fine and then there are the bubble boys and girls who will get sick by just looking outside, is there a balance between extreme ocd care and borderline disgusting that is healthy? Reply Tullius Agrippa Just like the Buddha, right? One form of extremism after another only to arrive in the end at the conclusion that the middle path is best. What a waste of time! Reply HighCarb Schwabe Well, if something almost kills you,it is probably NOT healthy. Instead of 'How a healthy lifestyle almost killed me' the title of the talk should be 'How acting as though I were too stupid to understand the most basic lifestyle factors gave me a hard time but also lots of funny anecdotes'. As for the bible, check out Daniel's diet and go from there. Maybe read "The Starch Solution" and some other books about whole foods plant based diets. Saves times. Improves results. Reply Sage Wang He was just trying to amuse us by doing things extreme, but as long as you get what he was really telling us, it's fine, just reminded us of"not too much of anything". No idea why so many dislikes. Reply Nick Stupidest Ted talk eva! Reply Alecia Korkowski Bill O-Reilly. LOL. Reply Greg Dahlen for a while now I've been pushing the masai diet. The Masai are a people in Kenya who are famous for living only on products from the cow: milk; beef; and blood that they extract from their cows without killing them. The Masai also follow an important rule: "If a man eats meat and drinks milk on the same day, he is a glutton." Therefore every day, I, who follow the diet, have to choose whether it will be a milk day or a meat day (so far I haven't found a source for blood.) While I like meat, I prefer milk, so basically I've been living on fluid milk products for the last six years. Most days I drink perhaps a gallon (3.5 liters) of some kind of milk, usually skim, and that's all I eat or drink. Sometimes I have some cream, or half and half, or some other kind of milk: 1%, 2%, or whole. I have done very well on this diet, I am six feet, one inch and this morning weighed 151 pounds. On my last physical, my PCP told me I am in the top 3% of people my age healthwise, which I attribute to the diet (my PCP is very aware of my diet.) I believe this diet would be excellent for everyone, and am particularly interested to see if it might help people with various diseases, including biggies like cancer and AIDS, and have been pushing the medical establishment to test it. Reply Feed Your Soul TV great vid! keep up the good work :) Reply Peace The saying, "Too much of anything is not good for you" goes a long way. Reply Chris Higginson Never take advice from a medical doctor on how to stay healthy. It's not in his interest and he hasn't studied it. Reply Cole Rowland I watched this while gorging myself on fried chicken. On top of this my job requires a physical every two years. Take that healthy people. You'll die a whole 8 years after me. Big whoop. Reply luke hall bible healthy living?????? Reply ThePapiDaddy Joy seems to play a lot into healthy living and that's something I've always thought to be true. If you are truly happy, you probably have lots of sources of joy so you "could" be healthier mentally and this should help you be healthier physically. Reply Amir Keyrain joker speaker, joker speech, joker book ads, really ted? Reply Kh ris The only thing I know is that Jack Lalanne live a long healthy life till 96 years old. Clearly the more we know about health and nutrition, the more scared are industries and politicians trying to attach us to unhealthy lifestyles. Or just like this idiot who only wants to sell us a book telling peoplo what they want to hear :/ Reply Freddy The Dog It was norwegian. Not swedish. Reply Pete Avitable "dermatologists" are wrong Reply Lottie Hula Hoops this sounds a lot more like a person who suffered with a form of extreme OCD, healthy living is incredibly different from trying to control & keep every single aspect of your life healthy and perfect!! a very bad example of healthy living 🙁 Reply MICHAEL TAYLOR lol… oy vey… is this really a ted talks? could have been a vlog post for all i know…when someone reads his book can you please let me know Reply strangertobluewater Downarrow me all you want, but I knew before I even wiki'd this guy that he grew up in a progressive northeast family, went to fancy private schools, and had some sort of useless liberal arts degree. There is a difference between intelligence and being pushed through the educational system at high levels. This speech demonstrates that point perfectly. Reply strangertobluewater Basically everything he did is the opposite of what healthy people would do–sunscreen, bacterial wipes? Ugh. Reply I Invoke My First Amendment Rights If you attempt to listen to all the "experts", you will become unhealthy, will be more likely to hurt yourself, and probably go insane. If you have two "experts" who are both recognized as experts on the same topic, what happens when one says to do something that is conflicting to what the other says? Reply movingforward so dumb, taking a holy book literally is the dumbest thing you can do. Reply A Danielli This person is an idiot. Clearly has no idea what 'healthy living' is Reply priyanka kay Ha there were no explanations and he could barely say the words fight or flight Reply Ezra Po Maybe for some these books are entertaining. My experience follows as such, giddy for the journey ahead to read of a real human live these crazy things, semi amused thinking the best was yet to come, scared this was as good as it got, finally disgusted I read as much as I did. Definitely not books that you somehow learn something about health or the bible or even life and yourself. Simple rambling stories throughout that implies you should be learning something about the human condition, but you don't. Like this wonderfully simple train of thought..(paraphrased of course) "Joy has an enormous effect on health, Junk food companies give us crunch which we like but don't want the bad health effects, Sunflower seeds are kind of crunchy and healthier than junk food, I put the seeds in my other food. Now I have some joy from the crunch and the health from the seeds." Rubbish! Congrats to him for selling these underwhelming experiences in sensationalist books that garner attention based on ridiculousness. Reply Hentai Manga Talking about NOISE POLLUTION, can ALL TED talks on youtube drop the ANNOYING intro sound that goes ALL the way up and down?! I have to turn down my volume but couldn't hear what the speaker was talking so I turned it up… Guess What!? They have the same Annoying Intro Music at the end! Reply SRINIVASA Bhat Funny but true Reply Surfer Rosa this guy is a bit cuckoo, but he's funny. nice vid :) Reply MinnetonkaChiro Funny stuff. Reply MatriXz Over "healty"-ing can be a terrible idea if you dont like to get sick.. You need jerms to train your immune system's ninja warriors.. Else they will only be trained in fighing dunnies, but when a big dinosaur jerm comes, they have no idea what to do, so the jerm wins.. Kinda went totally symbolic there, but you get the point.. Also eat meat, dont be afraid of meat, just dont OVER EAT, and dont supersize your meals.. Someone in Tedx once said, eat until you are 20% full, then stop because the last 20% comes after a few seconds that it takes your brain to recieve the "im full" command..
