#DrinkGoodDoGood – A Nutritionist Eats

If you’ve read my blog for any time now, you probably know that hunger in America is an issue that I care deeply about. It seems like people always have one issue, the one that’s most important to them. And hunger and the lack access to nutritious food has always been the issue that I care deepest about.

I think when you are into food and nutrition, it’s hard not to be aware of all issues surrounding food. Whether people have too much, too little, or not the right kind. It’s an issue that’s so important to me that for the last five years, I’ve spent my days working at an organization called MAZON, that fights hunger in the US.


So unfortunately, I’m fully aware of the facts. And I’ve talked about them here before. But even so, in our country full of abundance, the facts are still startling.


And they are even more startling when we find out it’s happening in our own communities. But once you know, it’s hard to turn away from the problem. And so I’m happy to have the opportunity to educate others about the facts. One of which is that 30 million Americans don’t have access to affordable, quality fresh produce.

Living in Southern California feels like the mecca of fresh fruits and vegetables. So many crops call California home, and we produce much of what the rest of the country eats. So many farmers markets with gorgeous (and pricey) produce. So many fancy restaurants featuring the finest produce in the most-inventive ways.

And then there’s the other side –  and the inequality in that is so painfully obvious. Not all neighborhoods have a farmers market. Not all neighborhoods have big grocery stores with rows of colorful produce. Not everyone can afford fresh produce – especially if you’re on a SNAP budget ($1.40 per meal).

It makes Wholesome Wave’s work so important. They work to “empower under-served consumers to make better food choices by increasing affordable access to healthy produce.” What does this mean? They have two main programs: one offers nutrition incentives to consumers using SNAP, so that when they buy fresh produce at participating stores and farmers markets, their money is doubled. (I love this program and am thrilled to announce that through the #DrinkGoodDoGood campaign, Naked Juice will donate 250,000 pounds of produce towards SNAP double bucks.) The other program works with Doctors to write prescriptions for produce. These programs just make so much sense to me from both a nutrition and anti-hunger standpoint.
